Our team embarked on an extraordinary journey to breathe new life into a tired coastal bungalow nestled along the idyllic shores of Pagham Harbour Beach in West Sussex. Our mission was clear - to create a contemporary beach retreat that perfectly complements the dynamic lifestyle of a family immersed in kayaking, water sports and open-air living.
At its core, the design features a mesmerising first-floor living room and elevated viewing deck, ingeniously cantilevered to offer uninterrupted views across the Solent.
A spacious open-plan kitchen seamlessly merges with a reclaimed timber deck, effortlessly extending the living space outdoors and embracing the shingle beach just steps away.
The layout centers around an impressive double-height hallway, guiding you to five generously proportioned bedrooms, three of which capture panoramic views of the sea and harbour through floor-to-ceiling glazing, bathing the space in natural light.
Saltmist's exterior exudes driftwood charm, blending harmoniously with its coastal surroundings. Within the front courtyard, a glazed oak-framed hallway and contemporary flint wall add refined touches alongside the weathered timber profile exterior.
Inside, sleek contemporary interiors showcase wide plank oak flooring and captivating rear views framed by an
awe-inspiring glass wall that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors.
The beach retreat also offers a feature landscape, including an inviting outdoor kitchen, a stylish games room and bar and convenient and refreshing outdoor shower to wash off the sand and saltwater after a day of beach adventures.
As the sun sets, a carefully positioned firepit with low-level seating becomes the perfect gathering spot, while a west-facing cedar wood hot tub provides warmth and serenity.
To accommodate water sports enthusiasts, ample storage was provided for wetsuits and equipment, along with a bespoke ‘70’s
surf-culture’ inspired fishing cave, rods rigged and ready to go!
Rusting Corten steel, reclaimed driftwood, shingle pathways and oversized cement flagstones, seamlessly blend with the coastal environment paying homage to the surrounding beach and harbour scape. The materials and design choices effortlessly reflect the
coastal charm, offering an authentic extension of the beach retreat's
natural beauty.
